Type SL Tortoise.Tortoise is one of the 1963 range of dressed animals, but is very rare to be found in any collection. Very few are known to exist. There has been a restored and redressed example sell at a UK auction house in 2015 and another in an auction in USA shortly after that. Other than those two I am not sure.
This puppet has never been on the open market since new. The owner of the puppet had it in the small collection she had with her sister, and this is the first time it has been seen by collectors. We have an image of the Tortoise box next to the Golly box, another from the same owner. You can see the green pen/crayon lines drawn around the name stamp. The name stamp is clearly visible under the overwriting. If you zoom too much the stamp becomes blurred of course.
Tortoise is really in immaculate condition. He has two screw eyes under his hood and these are clear and bright with no rusting. The clothes are excellent and all paintwork is excellent. I can see no flaws. Some puppets don't appeal to children to play with in their shows, and this one wasn't played with.
He wears a red and white striped T shirt under the brown duffel coat. The duffel coat is made from a cotton type of material rather than wool type and does not have real toggles which the restored version at auction seemed to have. This one has embroidered toggles. The edge of the coat has the corner creased from storage, I have not tried to press it back.
The red trousers are tied with pieces of yellow thread, they are actually very full but the images don't really show this.
The hood of the coat is lined all through, not just at the edges.
The soles of the feet show virtually no wear. He has the 1963 label stitched to the coat.
The control has a small amount of rust on the hook and the strings which are original, have very very light rust marks at intervals where the strings have been wrapped around the control.
The box is stamped correctly and has shelf wear. The instructions have the original owners writing on the top, neatly, "Tortoise".
He is small and such a quirky sweet puppet, he measures approx 9" tall. The overhang of his nose gives him a very cute appearance.
