1950'S GERMAN CELLULOID HEDGEHOG FAMILY
This is a 1950's group of celluloid hedgehog dolls from Germany. The storybook of Mecki, Micki and the children is famous in Germany and characters were made by Steiff of the dolls.
Fipps must be a different German toy maker of the same era.
The hedgehogs are all in used condition with worn clothes. The two larger dolls are worn, the felt hat is aged and has come off the head of one of them.
One lady hedgehog, Micki, is carrying a duck under her arm and wearing a skirt with a duck print on it. Both of the larger dolls have broken shoes due to ageing. One has a chip to her hand.
The two smaller pair of hedgehogs are wind up dancing toys and have lost the keys. They are in good condition.
Larger ones measure approx 10" tall smaller two measure approx 6" tall.
"The hedgehog is a figure in a Brother Grimm’s tale of the Hare and the Hedgehog from the 19th century. A film was made about this story by the Diehl Brothers in 1938/39, who called the hedgehog Mecki. He has since then been a comic figure in the German Horzu magazine and various children’s books. In 1951, the first Steiff Meckis were produced. Mecki’s wife, Micki, is the embodiment of a 1950s woman — calm, good-natured and always in the background. They have two children: Macki and Mucki."
(These seem to be two Micki dolls with children Macki and Mucki)
